How to Update Krita on Windows

If you’re using Windows OS like Windows 10, Windows 11, etc. then this guide is for you. Here are the steps to update Krita on Windows:

Step 1 – Visit the Krita software download page by clicking this link.

Step 2 – Click on the big blue button that reads Windows Installer 64-bit and wait for the file to download. Most computers have are 64-bit but in case your computer is 32-bit then you can choose the 32-bit Installer by clicking on All Download Versions and then selecting 32-bit.

Step 3 – Run the installer by clicking on the downloaded file. It will be a file with a .exe extension at the end. I am downloading the Krita 4.4.2 version so my downloaded file looks like krita-x64-4.4.2-setup.exe.

Step 4 – After clicking on the downloaded file press Yes to start the installation process and let it load.

Step 5 – Choose your preferred language and click OK.

Step 6 – You will get a dialog box that reads Welcome to Krita (x64) 4.4.2 Setup. You just have to click the Next button and in the next step, you just have to click on the “I accept the terms of License Agreement” and then click on Next.

Step 7 – Next, choose your installation location. By default, it will be C:\Program Files\Krita (x64) and it is best to keep it as it is. After choosing the location just click on Next.

Step 8 – Now you will have to choose the components to install. You will see that the Remove Old version option is automatically checked. Make sure all the options are checked (Shell Integration option also) and click on Next.

The Remove Old Version option automatically removes any previous versions of Krita and replaces them with the newest version. You won’t lose any of your previous data.

Step 9 – Click on the “I Agree” button for the License agreement, and then click on Next in the Choose Start Menu Folder option.

Step 10 – Click on the Install button in the confirm installation dialog box and wait for it to install. After installation is complete, press Next and then click on Finish.

That’s it. You have successfully updated Krita to the newest version on your Windows computer.

Step 3 – Right-click on the Appimage file and select Open, follow the instructions and wait for the installation to complete. This will install the updated version of Krita on your Linux computer.

Does Krita Update Automatically?

No, Krita doesn’t automatically update to a newer version. You have to manually download the new version and install it again.

Once you run the installer of the new version it will automatically remove the previous version and install the new version. All of your files and data will remain and nothing will be deleted.
