How To Get Rid Of Ants From Laptop and Computer

Ants are pesky little creatures that crawl into any small space they can get into. There have been several cases of ants attacking the computer and laptops.

These ants crawl into your Hard Drive, Battery, Processor, Motherboard, Keyboard, and even get inside behind the LCD screen.

If you think that these ants can’t do any harm then you’re totally wrong. If you don’t do something about this then your laptop or computer can get damaged completely and you’ll have no other option but to buy a new computer or laptop.

Fortunately, there are ways to get rid of ants from your computer, and this article I’ll go over these methods to protect your laptop and computer from ants.

Why are Ants attracted to Your Laptop or Computer?

Before we delve into the methods of getting rid of these pesky ants it’s important to understand why they are attracted to your laptop or computer in the first place.

The main reason why ants crawl inside your laptop or computer is that they need a safe place for nesting and there is no better place than inside a computer.

When they get inside your computer there is no danger of someone attacking them while nesting or harm their eggs after nesting. The only danger is getting electrocuted but the ants aren’t that smart of knowing beforehand that these computers can kill them by electric shock.

Once one or two ants get inside the computer they release Pheromone (Ant Saliva) trails which are picked up by other ants and within hours you’ll see more ants coming to join them or help them.

Sometimes ants can get inside the computer because they simply lose their way and look for a safe place to hide so that no one can harm or kill them.

If you keep sugary food items or drinks near the laptop or desktop then ants are attracted to the smell of these items and come crawling to feast on some sweet food and drinks.

Ants get inside the laptop through the air vents after which they navigate their way into any place they want to. They can enter the Hard Drive, get inside the Battery, crawl inside the Motherboard, or simply get inside the Processor. Ants can also get inside the LCD screen or stick to the screen surface.

Ants can also crawl inside the keyboard through the gaps between the keys and the laptop surface.

Can Ants Harm or Damage Your Laptop and Computer?

Ants can damage your laptop or computer if they get electrocuted inside the laptop or computer. If they don’t get electrocuted then there is no risk of any damage to the computer.

If the ants get electrocuted inside the battery then this will damage the battery and your laptop won’t turn On because the battery cannot provide any power.

If ants crawl inside the Hard Disk and get electrocuted then your Hard Disk won’t function because the internal circuitry will get damaged.

If ants get electrocuted inside the motherboard and processor then this will damage the capacitors and transformers in the motherboard and processor which will damage the entire internal circuit board and cause your laptop or computer to malfunction. In severe cases, your laptop may not start due to electrical failure.

If ants crawl inside the keyboard and get electrocuted then this will damage the internal circuit of the keyboard and your keys won’t function.

If ants somehow crawl inside behind the LCD display and get electrocuted then this will damage the laptop or computer screen and your display may not work anymore.

Best Ways To Get Rid of Ants and Keep Them Away From Your Laptop or Computer

Getting rid of these notorious ants can be difficult but not impossible. I will share numerous methods to get rid of these ants completely.

If ants are crawling on the surface of your laptop or computer then you can get rid of them in the following ways.

Place Mothballs or Naphthalene balls near your laptop or computer while working. Ants hate the smell of these substances and they won’t come anywhere near them. If you don’t have Mothballs or Naphthalene balls then you can also use Camphor.

If ants are crawling on the laptop surface then place a sugar cube or some sweet near the laptop so that these ants move from the laptop surface to the place where the sweet is placed. Now, place Ant traps surrounding the sweet and once the ants arrive they will get caught in the trap. You can also surround the sweet with Boric Acid.

Placing Ant poison near openings of laptop or computer like air vents, keyboard openings, etc. will prevent the ants from going inside the laptop or computer.

Clean the surface of your laptop or computer with a cloth dipped in disinfectant or anti-bacterial solution. Ants won’t come near the surface of the laptop or computer because they cannot withstand the smell of disinfectant. Make sure you put only a little amount of disinfectant so that the liquid cannot come in contact with the internal components of the computer.

Place some ant powder near the table or surface on which you place the laptop or computer. This ant powder will repel the ants and they won’t come near you.

You can use a Keyboard protector to protect your keyboard from ants. The keyboard protector also protects your keyboard from dogs, cats, and dust.

You can protect the LCD screen of your laptop or computer by using a Screen Protector. This also blocks harmful blue light emissions coming from the screen.

If you want to get rid of these ants from your laptop without killing them then you can follow the steps below.

Step 1 – Get a big bowl and fill it with water upto 1 cm height.

Step 2 – Now place a box that is big enough so that it fits inside the bowl and you can place your laptop over that box. If you don’t have a box of this size then place four water glasses in an inverted position so that you can rest your laptop over them.

Step 3 – Now place your laptop over the glasses or the box without it being plugged into charging.

Step 4 – Place a fork in such a way that one end leans against the laptop surface and the other end is touching the table or surface over which you put the bowl of water.

Step 5 – Keep this setup as it is and let it stay there for a few hours or the whole night.

You will find that the ants slowly move from the laptop surface and climb down the fork to go wherever they want to.

How To Get Rid of Ants That are Inside the Laptop or Computer

If ants creep inside the laptop or PC then there is no other option but to open the back cover of the laptop and check all the components thoroughly.

If you see ants coming out from the hard drive then you’ll have to open up the hard drive and shake it vigorously so that dead ants fall from there. After that, you need to clean the inside of the hard drive with a clean and soft cloth to remove any live ants from your hard drive.

If you see ants coming out from the battery then you have to similarly open up the battery, shake it and clean it with a soft and clean cloth to get rid of the ants from the battery.

If ants get inside the motherboard, processor, or keyboard then you should consult an expert or take your laptop to a repair center. It is highly advisable that you don’t mess with the electrical connections of the motherboard or CPU because you may end up damaging your computer.

If ants somehow crawl inside behind the LCD screen of the laptop or computer display then you’ll need to open the LCD panels and remove the ants by blowing dry air with a Blow Dryer. I’ll recommend you to do it with the help of an expert technician instead of doing it yourself.

Ants get inside the laptop and computer either to nest or to protect themselves from external forces. Once inside they release chemicals to attract other ants and this creates a huge mess.

Some ants get electrocuted due to the current flowing inside and these dead ants can cause circuit failures and other electric problems which can damage the hard drive, processor, motherboard, and the battery. Your entire laptop can get damaged in severe cases.

You can get rid of these ants and also keep them away from your laptop and computer with the methods shared in this article.
