In such a competitive environment, it’s important that you have the best resources to produce the highest quality stream for your audience.
Gone are the days of 360p live streaming. Your Fans want to see you play Fortnite, PUBG and other online Multiplayer games in 1080p or even 4K.
But streaming games at such high quality requires a lot of power, especially the system RAM and Graphics card VRAM .
But how much RAM is ideal for Streaming? After some thorough research, I have found the answer for you.
To stream games at HD 720p or 1080p, 16GB RAM is enough for you. This applies to both single and dedicated streaming PCs.
16GB RAM is adequate to run more graphic intensive PC games too, along with HD live streaming.
Streaming games at 4K requires more power, and 32 Gigabytes of RAM should be more than enough.
If you have additional RAM slots, then go for one 16GB RAM and one 8GB RAM.
For streaming movies and videos, 8GB RAM should be enough.
You can stream videos on YouTube Live and Facebook Live with 4GB RAM, but the quality of your stream will be poor with frequent lagging and distorted quality.

Is 4GB RAM enough for Streaming Games and Movies?
Absolutely Not. 4GB RAM is not recommended for streaming games.
If you want to stream movies on Netflix and Hulu Plus, then it’s okay, but when it comes to streaming games, it just won’t do the job.
Most high-end games require a minimum of 8GB RAM to run with some games even requiring 16GB RAM. 4GB RAM may not be enough to even run the game, let alone stream it.
Is 8GB RAM enough for Streaming?
You can stream games with 8GB RAM, but the quality of the live stream may not be the best.
Games such as Fortnite, PUBG, League of Legends, CS GO recommend 8GB of RAM to run the game. So, if you allocate most of your available memory to run the game, then the amount of memory left for streaming and other tasks will be very low.
This leads to frequent lags, distortion, and low frame rate(Frames Per Second) which means poor Stream Quality.
8GB RAM is more than enough for streaming movies on Netflix at HD 720p and 1080p. But Streaming at 4K may require additional RAM.
12GB or 16GB RAM should be sufficient to stream at 4K Video Quality.
Is 16GB RAM enough for Streaming Games?
16GB DDR4 RAM is what I recommend to all the Streamers out there.
You can run most high-end games at the highest quality Setting with no lag and you can stream games at HD 720p and 1080p with no visible loss in quality.
Streaming Games at 4K requires additional power. If there is an additional RAM slot, then you can add another 4GB RAM along with the dedicated 16GB RAM.
If you don’t have additional slots, then I’ll recommend going for 32GB Dedicated RAM.
Is 12GB RAM enough for streaming games and movies?
If you’re thinking of streaming games at HD 720p then 12GB RAM should be sufficient, but you may run into some problems in stream quality while streaming at HD 1080p or 4K.
You can stream movies on Netflix at HD 1080p without any problems with 12GB RAM.
Does Frequency of RAM or RAM Speed affect Stream Quality?
RAMs come at different frequencies and the higher the frequency the better will be your stream quality.
The two most noticeable frequencies for DDR4 RAMs are 2400 MHz and 3600 MHz.
As the RAM frequency or RAM speed increases the amount of data stored and retrieved of these streamed files also increases. This means streaming speed increases and the stream quality also increases.
A higher frequency RAM(3600 MHz) increases the Frame Rate(frames per second) which leads to a better quality stream.
A lower frequency RAM(2400 MHz) will run the stream at a lower frame rate which can cause visible distortions and lags in the stream.
Dual-Channel RAM vs Single Channel RAM: Which is better for Streaming?
Single Channel RAMs are single dedicated RAMs with one dedicated RAM slot whereas Dual-Channel RAMs contain two slots of RAMs instead of one.
Dual-Channel RAMs provide better Frame Rate and increased performance compared to Single Channel RAMs. For example, two sticks of 4GB RAM will provide better stream quality compared to one stick of 8GB RAM.
Does More RAM help with Streaming?
Yes, more RAM means your PC has additional memory to run multiple tasks. This increases the frame rate of your stream and provides better quality live stream.
Therefore, a computer with 32GB RAM will provide a better quality stream compared to a computer with 16GB RAM.
8GB RAMs may not be enough to stream high-end games at HD Quality. You can get away with streaming at 360p and 480p but they are not recommended for HD Streaming. These are enough to stream movies on Netflix at HD Quality.
4GB of RAM is not ideal for streaming games. You can stream movies on Netflix at 360p or 480p. You may notice some streaming issues at HD 720p and higher quality.
16GB RAM is what I recommend for streaming games on Twitch and other platforms. You can stream at HD 1080p but there may be some lag while streaming at 4K Quality. These are more than enough to stream movies and TV shows on Netflix at even 4K Quality.
If you want to run a lot of applications while streaming games at 4K quality without any hassle then go for 32GB RAM. This is a future proof solution if you have the budget.
