What is EpdgTestApp?

EpdgTestApp is a built-in system application on Samsung Android devices that conducts tests to check if the Evolved Packet Data Gateway (ePDG) is working properly to deliver secured voice and data transmission via communication services over untrusted non-3GPP networks.

The Application package(APK) name of the EpdgTestApp is com.sec.epdgtestapp. This app works directly with com.sec.epdg, which is the application package of the ePDG system app on Samsung devices.

What is EpdgTestApp Used For?

The EpdgTestApp conducts various tests to check if Wi-Fi calling, Voice Over Wi-Fi(VoWiFi), WiMax, and Voice Over Long Term Evolution(VoLTE) services with Evolved Packet Data Gateway (ePDG) are working properly on your device.

EpdgTestApp app details

ePDG works together with Evolved Packet Core (EPC) and untrusted non-3GPP networks to provide security during voice and data transmission via communication services like Wi-Fi, LTE, and WiMax.

ePDG uses certain protocols to make sure your voice and data are transmitted securely over IP networks. It also maintains a high Quality of Service and system stability.

Evolved Packet Core(EPC) is a core component of the 4G and LTE network architecture that converges voice and data over a single packet network instead of two different networks for voice and data.

3GPP or the 3rd Generation Partnership Project is a term that represents the number of standard development organizations that develop protocols for mobile telecommunications.

Is EpdgTestApp Safe or Is it a Virus?

Epdg Test App is a safe application and it is not a Virus, Malware or Spyware. It doesn’t cause any harm to your device and there are no instances of spying caused by this app.

It is an important application that checks if voice and data are being transmitted securely by testing the Wi-Fi calling, VoWiFi, VoLTE technologies on your phone.

It doesn’t use your cellular data. It uses your system resources only when running checks for certain technologies so it cannot be termed as bloatware.

EpdgTestApp Hack?

EpdgTestApp is not a hacking application. It cannot be used by hackers to recover sensitive information from your device.

As mentioned earlier, it is an important system application used for testing certain wireless communication technologies. Hackers cannot use this to track and intercept your wireless voice calls, video calls, or chat messages.

Can You Disable EpdgTestApp?

EpdgTestApp is a system application that can be disabled using a Package Disabler app. It cannot be disabled the same way you disable other third-party apps.

Permissions Required By EpdgTestApp

Every Android app requires Permissions to run. EpdgTestApp requires only one permission:

  • Phone – This permission allows the app to read your phone status and identity.

You can check all the permissions required for this app by going to Settings > Apps > Show System Apps > EpdgTestApp > Permissions.

EpdgTestApp Has Stopped

There are times when the EpdgTestApp crashes and you get an error message “EpdgTestApp has stopped.” This error happens because the cache files of the EpdgTestApp app become corrupted or overloaded.

If you don’t clear the app cache for a long time, the cache file size increases and the free space of the cache file storage folder decreases. When the cache file storage doesn’t have enough space, the cache files cannot be stored and the device declares the cache files as overloaded or corrupted.

You can fix this error by clearing the app cache, force stopping the app or by factory resetting your device. All the methods are mentioned below.

(1) Clear EpdgTestApp App Cache

Follow the steps below to clear the app cache of this system app.

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap Apps.
  • Tap the Ellipsis icon (3 vertical dots) in the upper right corner.
  • Tap Show System Apps.
  • Find the EpdgTestApp system app and tap on it.
  • Tap Storage.

  • Find the EpdgTestApp system app and tap on it.
  • Tap the Force Stop button.

(3) Factory Reset your Android Smartphone

A Factory Reset erases all the data from your phone and restores your phone to its original state so it will remove this error message for sure.

Before factory resetting your device, you must backup your data in your Samsung Cloud or Google Drive account. Once the backup is complete, follow the steps below.

  • Open Settings.
  • Tap General.
  • Tap Reset.
  • Tap Factory Data Reset.
  • Tap the “Reset” button and you may need to enter your PIN or password.

Can You Uninstall EpdgTestApp?

You can uninstall the EpdgTestApp system app using the Android Debug Bridge(ADB) software which doesn’t require you to root your device or using the System App Remover application which requires root access.

But, it is recommended that you don’t uninstall the EpdgTestApp because removing it might cause issues while testing wireless data and voice communication services like Wi-Fi calling, VoWiFi, VoLTE, WiMax, etc.

Also, this app doesn’t cause any battery draining issue and doesn’t consume your cellular data so there is no point in uninstalling this app. However, if you want to stop it from functioning then you can freeze the app using Titanium Backup.

Freeze EpdgTestApp Using Titanium Backup

Titanium Backup allows you to freeze/disable system applications but this requires you to root your Android device. You can read our Android Rooting tutorial here.
